Three Sentences is the thirteenth episode of the first season and the 13th overall episode of This Is Us.
Short Summary[]
Jack and Rebecca get in over their heads when they decide to throw Kate, Kevin and Randall three separate parties for their 10th birthday. Randall struggles to make time for William as things intensify at the office. Kevin makes a major decision in his romantic life. Kate's gastric bypass journey takes an unexpected turn.
Full Summary[]
On the triplets’ tenth birthday, they insist on having three separate parties instead of a combined one. Jack gets to thinking about how they’re growing up and asks Rebecca to have another kid, which she shoots down. Kate and Kevin’s parties go well, but most of Randall’s classmates don’t come to his. Rebecca is amazed that Randall is unbothered by this, prompting her to consider another kid. Kate’s friends all leave hers to go hang out with Kevin, so Jack comforts her, but for the first time, it doesn’t work. Jack and Rebecca commiserate over their kids growing up.
Kate backs out of gastric bypass surgery after what Toby went through, so her doctor recommends a weight loss retreat. She’s surprised to see that it focuses more on spirituality and meditation than diet and exercise. She talks to a cynical employee and they debate the authenticity of this place. He also hits on her. However, the retreat does have a positive effect on her, as she processes some of her childhood traumas during an therapeutic activity.
Randall competes with a co-worker, Sanjay, to land a big account. But William, who has stopped chemotherapy, shows up unexpectedly to his office. William drags Randall out to lunch for way too long, and even though it ruins his work plans, Randall stays out and teaches William to drive.
Kevin tries to repair things with Sloane. On Kate’s request, he takes Toby to a party and vents his frustrations to him. Toby tells Kevin he needs to decide in his heart whether he wants Sloane or Olivia and perform a grand romantic gesture. But Kevin actually runs off to find Sophie, his ex-wife (and Kate’s best friend from the birthday flashback). She rejects him at first, but then texts him back later.
