This Is Us Wiki

The Waiting Room is the fifteenth episode of the third season and the 51st overall episode of This Is Us.

Short Summary

Tensions run high as the Pearsons await news about Kate's pregnancy.

Full Summary

After Kate's water breaks, the Pearsons wait for news in the hospital waiting room. Beyond the initial news of Dr. Monroe being unable to delay labor for more than a few hours as opposed to several weeks as would be ideal, they have heard little about Kate or the baby's condition. As they wait, tensions rise: Randall and Beth bicker and cannot come to an agreement how best to obtain child care, especially after learning Rebecca and Miguel are considering relocating to California for Kate.

Kevin is hostile to Madison, who arrives to support Kate and is encouraged by Miguel to find her own way to do so. Madison later retrieves a Ruth Bader Ginsburg doll Kate bought a few months back to give to the baby when he was born.

Zoe hears out Kevin's explanation of his behavior, and indicates to Beth that she will stay with Kevin. She later reveals to Beth that the water bottle Kevin was drinking from earlier actually contained vodka.

Miguel tries to keep everyone occupied, and after failing to do so complains that he is marginalized within the family. Rebecca is disconnected and quiet, until Kevin and Randall's arguing prompts an outburst; remembering her experience in a similar waiting room when Jack died, Rebecca banishes anything that isn't about Kate.

Toby informs the family that Kate is okay and their son was born via caesarean section, and is on a ventilator. Toby and Kate agree to name the baby Jack, and Kate prays to her father for the baby's health, and hopes that her son will have Justice Ginsburg's strength.
