Short Summary[]
The Pearsons gather around Rebecca's bedside.
Full Summary[]
An unknown family takes a road trip. The kids in the backseat act up, causing the father to get distracted and crash the car. Most of the family is okay, but one of the children, Marcus, is in critical condition. At the hospital, the father crosses paths with Jack as he’s in the hospital for smoke inhalation. Jack passes on Dr. K’s platitude about making lemons from lemonade. Marcus flatlines but it resuscitated by Jack’s doctor, meaning he wasn’t there to stop Jack from dying. Marcus survives with a limp.
Marcus grows up to be a medical researcher. He discovers the beginnings of a cure for pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, his boss says they don’t have the funding to develop it further. He meets with his siblings at a diner. The line about lemonade had become the family’s unofficial motto. He eventually develops a cure for Alzheimer’s.
The whole family arrives to see Rebecca before she dies. Kate is late because she’s flying from London and worries that she won’t make it in time. Deja tells Randall she’s pregnant. Beth pays her respects to Rebecca, and she and Randall discuss their incoming grandchild. The family listens to Joni Mitchell and reminisce about Rebecca’s life. Sophie, Toby, Annie, and the rest of the family pay their respects. Kevin and Randall go last. They talk about childhood memories and find it’s difficult to recall specific details. Deja texts Malik that she’s pregnant, and he comes to see her and propose to her.
A dying Rebecca imagines herself on a train. She meets with William, who takes her on a tour of the train. As, outside her mind, Beth says her goodbyes to her, she imagines Beth on the train with her. Dr. K is the bartender in the bar car, and he assures her that she was a good parent. She meets with Miguel. William urges her to go to the caboose and pass on, but she refuses until she can talk to Kate.
Kate makes it in time and says her goodbyes. Rebecca talks with William about passing on and goes into the caboose. Inside is a bed that she lays in next to Jack.
