The Right Thing to Do is the eleventh episode of the first season and the 11th overall episode of This Is Us.
Short Summary[]
Kate struggles with her feelings in the aftermath of Toby's heart attack. As William begins to spend more time with Jesse, Randall has to get used to his father's new relationship. After receiving the news they're expecting triplets, Jack and Rebecca must find a way to afford a home that can accommodate three babies. Olivia unexpectedly resurfaces, throwing both Kevin and Sloane for a loop.
Full Summary[]
A flashback shows Jack’s childhood and abusive father, Jack and Rebecca buy a new apartment, and then learn they were having triplets. They worry about the financial stress. Rebecca’s mother derides her for the situation and offers for them to move in with her. After seeing the stress Rebecca is under, Jack goes to his father to borrow money. He sells his father his car to get a down payment for the house his construction company had been working on.
Toby is in a stable condition after his heart attack, but the doctor suggests heart surgery to prevent future problems. Toby is afraid to do it, but Kate says he needs to do it, so he decides to do it despite his fear. Before going into surgery, Toby tells Kate he loves her for the first time. After surgery, Kate tells Toby she loves him back, and proposes marriage.
Randall is dealing with the discomfort that came with learning that his father is bisexual. He tries getting to know Jessie, and the conversations are awkward. Randall accuses William of distancing himself from his family in favor of Jessie, and William admits that he’s been doing this to lessen their pain when the cancer kills him. Randall says he can handle the pain.
Kevin and Sloane are dating and putting on the play, but just as everything is going well, Olivia returns. After taking some time to think, he decides to pick Sloane for both the play and as a girlfriend, although he implies that he made the choice out of moral obligation rather than what he actually wants.
