The Big Three is the second episode of the first season and the 2nd overall episode of This Is Us.
Short Summary[]
Toby helps Kate relax in the midst of her fervent quest to lose weight; and Beth questions the motives of Randall's biological father, as Randall adjusts to having his dad in his life. Meanwhile, Rebecca and Jack begin to feel distant from one another; and Kevin faces the consequences of quitting his job.
Full Summary[]
Back in the past, the Pearson family is having some issues. Young Kate is on a diet, Randall dealing with bullying because he was adopted by a white family, and Jack has a bit of a drinking problem. Jack vents about his marital problems at a bar to his coworker Miguel. Jack promises Rebecca to quit drinking. He gives Rebecca a crescent moon necklace that she promises to never take off.
Kevin invites Toby and Kate to a party that Kevin’s agent throws so Kevin can talk things out with the network executives. The head network executive tells Kevin he’s not getting out of the show and that he has to stay on or else he’ll never work again. Toby tries to get Kate to cut loose and have fun at the party, but she keeps getting self-conscious and assuming people are laughing at her weight. Toby comforts her. Kevin calls Randall about his dilemma, and he gives Kevin a pep talk. But there’s also a bit of tension there that calls back to how when they were little, Kevin never defended Randall from bullies. Kevin tells the network that he’ll never go back to the show no matter what.
Beth talks to William about Randall, and how Randall is sometimes too good and too selfless to know what’s good for him. She insinuates that William might be manipulating Randall, but William seems genuine.
The present-day Rebecca visits Randall, but she’s married to Miguel.
