Short Summary[]
Several people whose lives are mysteriously intertwined begin to notice peculiar coincidences about each other in the series premiere of this dramedy.
Full Summary[]
The main characters are introduced, all of whom were born on the same date. There’s a couple, Jack and Rebecca Pearson. Rebecca is pregnant with triplets, and her water breaks, meaning dad and kids will have the same birthday. We also meet Kevin, Kate, and Randall. Kevin is a famous actor, Kate is his sister battling obesity, and Randall is a rich executive trying to track down his biological father. All three of them show signs of mental health struggles of some kind. Kevin is on a sitcom called The Man-ny that he hates, until he has a meltdown on set and quits. Kate goes to a support group for overweight people and flirts with a man named Toby. Randall finds his dad, William, and goes to tell him off, only to find that his dad isn’t what he expected. His dad was a drug addict when he abandoned him, but he got clean and seems genuinely remorseful. So Randall, on impulse, invites him to meet the rest of his family - his wife Beth and his daughters Annie and Tess. Randall is excited to start a relationship, but William reveals that he has terminal cancer. Rebecca gives birth, but one of the three triplets was a stillborn. Jack and Rebecca are devastated, but then, because they desperately want three babies, they adopt a third kid born on the same day. The twist reveal is that the scenes with Jack and Rebecca take place in the past, and their three kids are Kevin, Kate, and Randall.
